April 25th, 2026 Tri-Club Spring Tailgate

On Saturday, April 25th, 2026, the Wiregrass W4DHN Ham Club, DARC (Daleville Ham Club) and EARS (Enterprise Ham Club) hosted a combined Tailgate at the Square in Headland.  The event began about 8:30am and concluded at noon.  During the time, some wonderful classes/demonstrations occurred.  Steve started us off with a class on Tape Measure Antennas with a demonstration of how wonderful they work.  Dan, hosted a table on Emergency Morse Code with an actual Morse Code transmitting along with information to get anyone started becoming proficient in Morse Code or just the Emergency Phrases with a card to carry with them.  Carl, hosted a table building actual radios where you soldered the parts together as you learned what they do.  Rachel and Jan hosted the Snap Circuits table for the younger folks to learn about how to safely put together electrodes, diodes, batteries, transmitters, etc.  Jimmy manned a table on Parks on the Air for folks to learn about the POTA events.  Greg had a table for all things Amateur Radio.  Anything you want to know about Amateur Radio, Greg could get you in the right direction.  Alan set up an antenna farm in which a variety of antennas were erected with plaques of information with what they are used for and frequencies.  The Daleville Club, President Brian, hosted a tent complete with radio set up for broadcasting and receiving for those inclined to see Amateur Radio in action as well.  ARRL was on-site to introduce folks to the National Association for Amateur Radio.  Testing for folks wanting to get their Technician license or upgrade, was held at 10AM in the courthouse.  There were drawings for door prizes and a grand prize given at the end.  Chester won the grand prize.

The rain held off and kept the weather nice. God is good!

Thank you to Loose Brick Cafe for coming out and providing donuts and coffees for purchase.

A big thank you to all the vendors that came to sell their wares and make this tailgate a success.

Most of all, thank you to all the volunteers of the three clubs that came and made this event happen.  It’s because of your dedication that Amateur Radio will continue to survive and be of service in our ever changing electronic media fast track world.

I am forever grateful!

ARRL Field Day 2024

The Wiregrass Amateur Radio Club will once again participate in ARRL Field Day on Saturday and Sunday, June 22-23, 2024. The club will be set up at Northside Methodist Academy, located at 2600 Redmond Road in Dothan.  The club will be operating starting at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 22.

The purpose of ARRL Field Day is to practice portable operations and hone our emergency communications skills. Amateur radio plays a huge role in the community, especially in the event of a natural disaster when normal communications are down for any period of time. Field Day gives us the opportunity to practice set-up and operation of our stations, so we can better respond when the need arises.

If you are a ham radio licensee, regardless if you are a club member or not, we invite you out to participate. Even if you do not have an amateur radio license, we invite you to come out and see what it’s all about. We’ll even let you get on the air if you like!
